The model achieved the highest ratings in the ‘large family’ category in Euro NCAP’s 2013 safety performance testing programme.
Overall, the Lexus IS 300h achieved a maximum five-star rating in the tests, with a total score of 91 per cent.
The hybrid saloon performed brilliantly in each area of testing. Lexus’ new model received a score of 91 per cent for ‘adult occupant safety’ and 85 per cent for ‘child occupant safety’.
In addition, the IS 300h achieved ratings of 80 per cent and 66 per cent for ‘pedestrian protection’ and ‘safety assist features’, respectively.
Euro NCAP noted the effectiveness of the model’s active pop-up bonnet – which is fitted as standard to all models in the Lexus IS range.
The technology works when sensors in the front bumper detect that a pedestrian has been hit, which then triggers a system that instantaneously raises the height of the bonnet.
This increases the bonnet clearance over the engine and other hard elements in the vehicle, helping to decrease any harm that may occur to pedestrians.
Euro NCAP safety tests have also commended the performance of the front bumper and leading edge of the bonnet, both of which secured a maximum score for pedestrian protection.
The Lexus IS 300h is the first full hybrid version of the Japanese marque’s premium sports saloon and has been on sale in the UK since July 2013.
Featuring the Lexus Hybrid Drive system, the IS 300h offers CO2 emissions from just 99g/km and delivers particularly attractive Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates for company car drivers. The most frugal IS 300h model also returns average fuel economy of 65.7mpg.
The new Lexus IS 300h is available in four trim levels: SE, Luxury, F Sport and Premier, with prices starting from £29,495.
